There are several different types of lamp sockets available. Each has its own specific use. Pictured are 6 basic types.
These are (from left to right top row): Porcelain Socket - best for situations where very high wattage bulb will be used, holds up best with heat
Dimmer Socket - allows for full range of light options up to highest wattage of bulb used, also the most expensive socket
Keyless Socket- for use on lamps requiring a line or base switch
(from left to right bottom row) 3 Way Socket - turn switch allows for 3 levels of light, for use with 3 way bulbs
Push Thru Socket - uses a post that is pushed to turn the light on and off, one level of light available
Pull Chain Socket - pull chain to turn light on and off, also available in 3 way option
